Summer is just around the corner and that means that it is time to blow the dust out of AC units or switch the HVAC switch over to cool in the house. Either way, air conditioning needs to be serviced on a regular basis to make sure that it functions correctly making it less expensive to stay cool in the summer.
There are a few air conditioning repairs that you might be able to handle on your own. However, only if you are having some basic problems. The following is a quick cheat sheet for some of the top summer air conditioning repair tips. Remember though that if you don’t know what to do it is always best to call in a repair man before the air conditioning system becomes seriously damaged requiring high cost repairs!
1.) Air Is Not Cold
The number one problem that people have with air conditioning units is that the air is not cold. It is possible for the AC to be smoothly blowing out air that is not actually cooled. There are a few quick things you can check in this instance.
• Pull out the condenser unit and clean debris. Many times the condenser gets obstructed by debris which is all it takes to stop the cool air.
• Clean the compressor unit. Inside of the unit is a fan that often gets dirty. Carefully wipe off with a damp cloth without touching the electrics. Do not use a hose or place under the faucet, you could cause serious problems!
• Clean out AC filters because dirty filters will cause the AC to have to work harder to cool.
2.) AC Makes Odd Noises
If your air conditioning unit is making odd noises you may want to check the screws. The number one reason that units make noise is loose screws. The second reason is mechanical friction. With a screwdriver and some lubricant you can fix both issues. Make sure to check your AC manual first however to make sure that you are not using lubricant too frequently.
3.) Water Dripping
Piping is usually responsible for leaks. If a pipe is leaking then it will most likely need to be replaced. If you cannot find any leaks in the pump then the pump might not be functioning properly. The pump is responsible for putting hot air into the condenser and if it is not properly functioning condensation might form. In this case you will need to get ac repair or completely replace the pump in a timely fashion before green mold starts to grow inside the AC and more clean up is required.
