When is it Time to Replace Your Air Conditioner?

by Chris Long - June 22, 2017

Older air conditioning systems can be more costly to run for several reasons.

Installing a new central air conditioner can be a major investment, but so can constantly having to repair and run an older, inefficient cooling system.

But how do you know when it’s time to bite the bullet and get a new AC unit? Here are a few signs that should trigger the (figurative) “replace central air conditioner” alarm in your home.

Infographic.jpg1.How old is your system?

On average, an air conditioning system should last 10 to 15 years. If your AC unit has passed the 10-year mark, it may be time to think about replacing it. Why? For one thing, a chemical called R22.

R22 is a Freon refrigerant that is being phased out to meet EPA regulations. Because R22 is being discontinued, it’s become harder to source, and thus costlier. Newer AC systems are designed to meet EPA regulations and are more eco-friendly and energy efficient.

2. Frequent breakdowns, costly repairs

Does it seem like you’re constantly calling your AC service technician for repairs, the cost of which is really adding up? At some point, it may be cheaper for you to simply purchase a new system, especially when you need to replace parts not covered by your warranty.

House Dust can be a sign that your air conditioning system need replacement.3. You’re seeing a lot of dust and hearing a lot of noise

While there’s no “Replace Central Air Conditioner” sign on your system, there are warning signs you can look for, such as dust.

Let’s say you give your home a good once-over with your Swiffer every week, but the dust just seems to keep piling up. That’s a strong sign that you have leaks in your ductwork, which can reduce the efficiency of your system and raise your energy costs. A more efficient AC unit can help.

You might also be hearing a great deal of noise from your system, which is often a sign that your duct system is not large enough to handle the load, or that there’s a problem with the unit’s indoor coil.

4. Your home is uncomfortable

Does it seem like you’re having a harder time cooling your home? This is often the sign your air conditioner is worn out (or in some cases, isn’t sized properly). Whatever the case, you had central air installed to keep your home comfortable. If you aren’t comfortable, it may be time for a new AC system.

If your energy bill is rising, you haven’t changed the way you’re using your system, and your electric company hasn’t raised its rates – it’s a sign that your system isn’t as efficient as it once was.

6. Uneven cooling or humidity control

Central air is supposed to keep your home from feeling humid. Excess humidity can not only make you feel uncomfortable, it can cause mold and mildew to form, putting you and your home in danger.

Humidity indoors can signal that your airconditioning system is not working as it should. When your air conditioning system can’t remove humidity, it may be the result of malfunctioning equipment, or problems with your ductwork. In either case, you should weigh the cost of repairs against the price of installing a new system.
